One of the easiest mistakes to make in Mombasa is assuming itโs a compact city where everything sits a few streets apart.
It doesnโt.
Stop thinking in terms of roads and start thinking in terms of direction.
Mombasa Island is the cityโs centre.
Itโs home to the CBD, Old Town, Fort Jesus, Pembe za Ndovu and Marikiti Market.
Itโs where most visitors begin exploring and where much of the cityโs commercial life unfolds.
Cross Nyali Bridge heading north and youโve entered the North Coast.
This direction includes Kongowea, Nyali, Bombolulu, Bamburi, Shanzu and eventually Mtwapa.
Many of the hotels, restaurants, beaches and shopping centres visitors are looking for lie in this direction.
Travel south and youโll reach Likoni Ferry.
The ferry is the gateway to the South Coast and destinations such as Diani, Tiwi and Ukunda.
During busy periods, queues build quickly, so always allow extra time.
Moi International Airport and the SGR terminus at Miritini sit west of the island.
Neither is in the city centre, which is why youโll almost always need onward transport after arriving at either.
Once those four directions are clear, the island, north, south and west, Mombasa suddenly becomes much easier to visualise.
Youโll stop trying to memorise roads and start recognising how the city flows.
