For public referral and specialist care, Coast General is the most important hospital in Mombasa. The 723-bed Level 5 hospital in Tononoka serves Mombasa as well as patients referred from elsewhere along the Coast. Its accident and emergency service operates around the clock.

Beyond emergency treatment, Coast General handles a wide range of inpatient and specialist care, including maternity, intensive care, cardiology, oncology, mental-health services, diagnostics and specialist clinics.

For anyone referred from a smaller public facility, or looking for specialist treatment within the public health system, Coast General is likely to be one of the first hospitals to consider.

Aga Khan Hospital Mombasa

Aga Khan Hospital has grown considerably in recent years. An expansion completed in 2024 increased the Mombasa hospital from 86 to 115 beds and added more capacity for emergency treatment, intensive care, neonatal care and specialist services.

The hospital is on Vanga Road on Mombasa Island and handles both adult and paediatric emergencies. Its specialist services include areas such as cardiology, oncology, neurology, psychiatry and advanced surgery.

Aga Khan also has a wider network of healthcare facilities around the Coast, which can be useful for patients who live outside central Mombasa.

The Mombasa Hospital

Few hospitals in Mombasa have a history stretching back as far as The Mombasa Hospital. Its original building dates to 1891 and is now a national monument, but the hospital remains an active private healthcare facility in Kizingo.

It provides emergency, inpatient and outpatient treatment together with intensive care, haemodialysis, operating theatres, radiology and imaging, physiotherapy and specialist clinics. Its laboratory operates 24 hours, as does the pharmacy.

Mombasa Hospital visiting hours

General ward visiting hours are 11:00 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 17:30.

Maternity follows the same daytime visiting periods, with an additional 19:30 to 20:00 period for husbands. The hospital allows two visitors per patient at a time.

Pandya Memorial Hospital

Pandya Memorial Hospital sits on Dedan Kimathi Avenue in Kizingo and is one of Mombasa’s established private hospitals.

Its services cover general and specialist medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, cardiology, diagnostics and critical care. The intensive-care unit includes eight adult critical-care spaces as well as neonatal and paediatric ICU facilities.

Pandya also operates its own cardiac life-support ambulance service, available 24 hours.

Premier Hospital

Premier Hospital is an 82-bed private hospital on Links Road in Nyali. For people staying or living north of the island, it is one of the area’s main full-service hospital options.

The hospital covers internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and critical care. It also has an emergency department, inpatient wards and diagnostic and support services.

Bomu Hospital

Bomu Hospital in Changamwe combines hospital care with a much wider community-health role.

It began with reproductive and family-planning work and has developed into a non-profit healthcare organisation providing primary and secondary care. Patients can access inpatient and outpatient treatment, maternal and child healthcare, radiology, laboratory services, ambulance care and specialist clinics.

Bomu is also particularly well known for its long-running HIV, TB and community-health programmes.

MEWA Hospital in Majengo has grown from a small outpatient service into a 49-bed hospital.

It provides round-the-clock outpatient care together with accident and emergency treatment, maternity care, diagnostics, laboratory services, theatre, pharmacy, radiology and specialist clinics.

Nairobi Women’s Hospital Mombasa

Despite the name, Nairobi Women’s Hospital is not limited to women’s healthcare.

Its Mombasa branch is at Kilindini Plaza on Moi Avenue in the CBD and operates 24 hours for inpatient and outpatient care.

Gertrude’s Mombasa Medical Centre

Gertrude’s presence in Mombasa is a medical centre rather than a full standalone children’s hospital.

It is on the first floor of Links Plaza on Links Road in Nyali and forms part of Gertrude’s paediatric healthcare network.

For parents, the distinction matters. Gertrude’s is particularly relevant when you are looking for paediatric care or a children’s specialist rather than a general hospital emergency department.

Nyali Healthcare

Nyali Healthcare is slightly different from the larger hospitals in this guide because its Nyali and Bamburi branches do not serve exactly the same purpose.

The Nyali branch on Links Road is geared towards outpatient treatment. The Bamburi facility provides inpatient care and has 17 beds, making Bamburi the relevant branch if hospital admission is required.

That is worth checking before setting out, particularly if you are looking for more than a consultation, test or outpatient procedure.

Welcare Medical Centre

Tucked behind City Mall on 1st Avenue, Welcare is one of New Nyali’s more comprehensive medical facilities.

It handles both outpatient and inpatient care and has accident and emergency services, an ICU, laboratory, pharmacy, physiotherapy, dental care and diagnostic imaging. Specialist clinics cover areas including orthopaedics, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology and general medicine.

Its ambulance service runs 24 hours.

Other public hospitals in Mombasa County

Coast General is the county’s main referral hospital, but it is not the only public hospital serving Mombasa.

Tudor, Port Reitz and Likoni all have public hospital facilities serving their respective parts of the county. They matter particularly for residents who would otherwise have to cross significant parts of Mombasa to reach Coast General. Mombasa County continues to operate Tudor and Port Reitz as sub-county hospitals, with Likoni also forming part of the county hospital network.

For routine or planned treatment, check the services offered at the nearest facility before travelling. Not every sub-county hospital has the same departments or specialist coverage.

Which hospitals in Mombasa have 24-hour emergency care?

If the situation is urgent, several of Mombasa’s larger hospitals provide round-the-clock emergency care.

Coast General has a 24-hour accident and emergency service. Aga Khan Hospital Mombasa has a dedicated accident and emergency unit, while Premier operates emergency and ambulance services from its Nyali hospital.

MEWA provides 24-hour outpatient and accident and emergency services, Jocham is open around the clock, and Welcare has 24-hour emergency coverage and ambulance services.

Pandya Memorial Hospital also has a 24-hour ambulance service.

In a medical emergency, do not spend time comparing every hospital in the city. Use the nearest appropriate emergency facility or call the hospital’s emergency line for guidance.

Which is the best private hospital in Mombasa?

There is no useful single answer to this because the best hospital depends on why you need it.

Aga Khan, The Mombasa Hospital, Pandya Memorial and Premier are among the city’s major private hospitals, but choosing between them should come down to the treatment required, the specialist you need, how urgent the situation is, where you are in Mombasa and whether the hospital works with your insurer.

For a planned procedure or specialist consultation, ask about the particular department rather than choosing on the hospital’s name alone.

Which is the main public hospital in Mombasa?

Coast General Teaching & Referral Hospital is Mombasa’s main public referral hospital.

The Level 5 hospital in Tononoka has 723 beds and handles emergency treatment as well as specialist and referral cases from Mombasa and the wider Coast region.

Nyali has one of the strongest concentrations of private healthcare facilities in Mombasa.

Premier Hospital is a full private hospital on Links Road. Gertrude’s Mombasa Medical Centre is at Links Plaza and focuses on paediatric care. Nyali Healthcare also has an outpatient branch on Links Road, while its inpatient facility is in Bamburi.

Welcare is behind City Mall on 1st Avenue, and Mombasa Eye Hospital & Laser Centre is in nearby Mkomani.

The choice between them depends on whether you need a general hospital, outpatient treatment, paediatric care or a specialist service such as ophthalmology.

Hospital visiting hours in Mombasa

Do not assume that visiting hours are the same from one hospital to another.

At The Mombasa Hospital, general ward visits run from 11:00 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 17:30. Maternity has an additional period from 19:30 to 20:00 for husbands.

Premier Hospital uses three visiting periods, 06:00 to 07:00, 11:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 18:00.

ICU, maternity, paediatric and specialist wards may have their own rules, so check before making a special journey to see an admitted patient.
